Introduction

Uzo started her neighborhood series in the winter of 2020 with her depiction of row houses in Washington D.C. that she saw in a gentrified neighborhood. Once-modest row houses command seven figures these days adding to D.C having the highest rates of displacement in the country. The city that once proudly dubbed itself “Chocolate City” and an icon of Black Political Power is no longer majority black. It became evident for Uzo to add these displaced communities back with her paintings using flat bold colors and people in motion. Since then, she has explored and created multiple neighborhoods in the past 3 years. The artist has decided to put this era an end and now implores other artists to create their own communities in one final Neighborhood exhibition.
